Saxophonist Charlie «Bird» Parker (1920-1955) was a major contributor in the evolution of Jazz from 1945 on. Bird’s innovations as an improviser have influenced most every contemporary alto-saxophone player, and his harmonic conceptions, revolutionary when first created, have become the common ground for modern Jazz composers and interpreters. But Parker was also an exceptional composer, and some of his tunes, like «Au Privave», «Billie’s Bounce», «Ko-ko», «Now is the Time» or «Parker’s Mood» have become standard in the Jazz repertory.

We created THE CHARLIE PARKER LEGACY BAND in the late nineties, with the intention of keeping the Bird’s music alive through the voices of contemporary musicians. The group combined, in its different editions, the talents of Jesse Davis, Vincent Herring, Wes Anderson, Jon Faddis, Terell Stafford, Grant Stewart, Dado Moroni, Darryl Hall, Leon Parker, Ronnie Mathews, Ray Drummond, Reggie Johnson, Jimmy Cobb and Alvin Queen.

For the 2020 European tour, celebrating Charlie Parker’s Centennial, we have re-united some of the top contemporary musicians living in Europe with the strongest roots in Bird’s music and Be-Bop music: Francesco Cafiso, Luigi Grasso and Jesse Davis on alto sax, Andrea Pozza on piano, Joshua Ginsburg on bass and Mario Gonzi on drums. We have been authorized by the state of Phil Woods to use some of his arrangements for three saxophones: the Phil Woods connection closes the gap between our musicians and the genius of Charlie Parker.
