Saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker (1920-1955) was a major contributor in the evolution of Jazz from 1945 on. Bird’s innovations as an improviser have influenced most every contemporary alto-saxophone player, and his harmonical conceptions, revolutionary when first created, have become the common ground for modern Jazz composers and interpreters. But Parker was also an exceptional composer, and some of his tunes, like “Au Privave”, “Billie’s Bounce”, “Ko-ko”, “Now is the Time” or “Parker’s Mood” have become standard in the Jazz repertory.
Jesse Davis, one of the contemporary alto-saxophone players with more roots in Bird’s music, put together this small band in 2004, to perform the compositions of Charlie Parker on a contemporary way. The group has combined, in its different versions, the talents of young improvisers like Terell Stafford, Vincent Herring, Wes Anderson or Grant Stewart with the rhythmical knowledge of veterans like Ronnie Mathews, Ray Drummond, Reggie Johnson, Jimmy Cobb or Alvin Queen.
